BOISE - The American Federation of Government Employees, AFL-CIO, Local 1273 at the Boise Department of Veterans Affairs reached a major milestone on April 19, 2017: for the first time AFGE Local 1273 has 500 members and has organized 50% of the bargaining unit. 5 years ago AFGE Local 1273 had 275 members.
" I attribute this growth in membership to several factors: chief among them the strong desire of our members to contribute to the common good and do the socially responsible thing by becoming a member of their union," says Travis Riggs, AFGE Local 1273 President. "I also have to give credit to the success of our recruitment programs and especially to our talented Vice President and Chief Steward, Tamlyn Ulin-Gilson."
Local 1273's growth is mirrored by the growth of AFGE overall, which has defied the odds and has enjoyed continued membership growth for the past 15 consecutive years, even as other unions face declining membership.
"I think it is a testament to the strength, will, and character of our members that we continue to stick together, stand up for one another, even as we have faced a Congress that wants to slash pay, slash jobs, reduce services for our veterans and privatize government at the expense of the taxpayer," said Riggs.
